Green Day - Saviors - Album Review.

I went to my very first listening party for Green Day’s new Album - Saviors. It is hosted by the lovely Vinilo Records in Southampton. And, one of my favourite things happened…I got free sh*t.

It kicked off with a recorded message from Billy explaining how proud they were of their new album - as they should be! Every song was of a very high standard. Then, we continued to listen to the full album.

Green Day are walking into 2024, celebrating the anniversaries of two career-making albums: 30 Years of ‘Dookie’ and 20 years of ‘American Idiot’ and this new album fits so well next to these two. It’s like these 3 albums feature their main work and their other albums support them but aren’t the main storyline.

“The American Dream is killing me” - This track is a great parallel to American Idiot in that it has the perfect balance to scratch your nostalgic itch. Let’s be honest, we love our favourite artists bringing out new music, but at the same time, we don’t like not knowing their songs. We are the types of people who hate change and new things so this new album was like holding our hands as we get to know their new songs.

The album sounds like Green Day's American Idiot era but more grown up. The words and lines are cleverer and more concise, but the sound of Green Day is still there. They’re mad at the world and just want to be loved, whilst their overarching theme is “that’s growing up wasn’t worth it.”

Personally, I loved the album, but it didn’t change my life. It’s just what I expected, and I’m happy with that.

Green Day made a bold move when they decided to run a high number of listening parties before the album was even released. The more parties, the more risk of leaks! But they wanted to support local stores and this was a great way to support them whilst also getting their music into the hands of their fans quickly. I’m aware this was all a marketing tactic to give the new album a big push but it was still a risk because if the whole album has leaked in full then people won’t purchase it either.

You can purchase their new album here, which is out on Jan 19th 2024. - But I do recommend checking out your local record store.
